Dental Crowns in Jackson Heights That Protect a Weak Tooth

How a Porcelain or Ceramic Crown Restores a Tooth

A porcelain or ceramic crown from Queens Central Dental is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over the entire tooth above the gums. Unlike a veneer, which covers only the front, it protects and supports a cracked or weak tooth. Some people call it a cap.

Material depends on the tooth. All-ceramic and porcelain crowns look the most like natural enamel, while zirconia, an extra-strong ceramic, holds up to heavier biting forces.

When a Tooth Is More Filling Than Tooth

Most dental crowns start with a tooth that’s cracked, worn down, or held together by a big old filling. Teeth treated with a root canal get them too. So does a badly stained front tooth.

The worries are usually about the front teeth, where a crown that’s a shade off would show every time you talk. Others wonder whether a crown is really necessary or just an upsell. Both are worth asking about.

Dr. Ilya Ames, From Tooth Prep to Final Fitting

At Queens Central Dental, the dentist who shapes your tooth also fits the finished crown. That’s Dr. Ilya Ames, a general dentist with more than 20 years in practice and a DDS from SUNY Buffalo. His focus is cosmetic dentistry and implants.

A crown isn’t the default here. If a filling can still do the job, Dr. Ames will tell you that before he suggests anything bigger. And you check the shade at the fitting, before it’s cemented.

Getting a Crown Done Before Your Benefits Reset

A dental crown at our Jackson Heights office usually takes two visits, about two to three weeks apart while the lab makes it. A temporary crown, usually resin, covers the tooth in between. Pricing is set before prep.

Many dental plans reset on January 1, and unused benefits usually don’t carry over. With two visits and lab time in between, a crown started in the fall has room to finish before the reset. Check your plan’s end date.

Porcelain and Ceramic Crowns for East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights

Within about five miles of Jackson Heights, getting a porcelain or ceramic crown means a short trip to our office. That takes in Forest Hills too.

Live off Astoria Boulevard or walk along the Malcolm X Promenade? Then you’re one neighborhood away. Plus, Dr. Ames speaks English and Spanish, so you can talk through every step in whichever language feels easier.

FAQs

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and look. Crowns are used for cracked, weak, or worn teeth, teeth with large fillings, and teeth treated with a root canal. They can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a mix.

How much does a dental crown cost?

Queens Central Dental prices a crown by the material and what the tooth needs first, such as a buildup or a root canal, so the exact figure comes after an exam. You’ll see the full cost, and what your insurance is expected to pay, before any work starts.

Does dental insurance cover crowns?

We work with PPO plans from Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, EmblemHealth, UnitedHealthcare, and others, and many of them pay part of the cost when a crown repairs a damaged tooth. A crown placed only for looks is less likely to be covered. We’ll go over your coverage with you before treatment.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Getting a crown usually isn’t painful, because the tooth is numbed before it’s shaped, and more numbing can be given if you feel anything. Some sensitivity to hot and cold for a couple of weeks afterward is normal. Pain that keeps you up at night isn’t, so call your dentist if that happens.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns last five to 15 years on average, and with good care some last 30 years or more. Chewing ice, hard nuts, or popcorn kernels can crack or loosen one sooner. If you grind or clench your teeth, a custom mouth guard can help protect it.

Can you whiten porcelain crowns?

Whitening doesn’t change the color of porcelain or ceramic crowns, or of fillings and veneers. If you want brighter teeth, whiten first, then have the crown shaded to match the new color. An older crown that no longer matches can be replaced with one in a closer shade.
